The Mortal Instruments series

By Cassandra Clare

I’m just going to come right out with it. I’m a sucker for a pretty cover. I’ll buy a book just for the cover art. I mean, just take a peek around this page. How irresistible is Burn Bright? How could you not possibly gravitate toward it in a bookshop, need to hold it, stroke it, own it? (Um, yeah. Okay. Too much information…) These were my thoughts exactly when I spied the first book in The Mortal Instruments series, City of Bones, way back in 2007.

Back then, I’d never heard of The Mortal Instruments or the author, Cassandra Clare. I hadn’t read a review, had it recommended to me, or heard any Internet buzz. I was a Mortal Instruments virgin. So it was with some trepidation I gently cracked open the beautiful cover. Would it be one of those books – you know, the ones that are all show and no substance? Thankfully not. I devoured the story of Clary and the uber cool Shadowhunters in a little over a day. To put it bluntly, all three of the Mortal Instruments books are Awesome. Note the capital A. And yes, I’ll admit right up front I’m biased these days. Cassandra Clare has become one of my all-time favourite authors.

It’s in City of Bones that we first meet the seemingly average Clary Fray who lives with her ‘widowed’ mother, Jocelyn. Along with her best friend, Simon, Clary is a loveable geek – in the coolest sense of the word. One night, Clary witnesses a murder in a Brooklyn (NY) nightclub, and is shocked to find only she can see the culprit (a very nice looking boy called Jace) and the victim. Jace claims it was a demon he murdered, and is intrigued that Clary can see him and his two cohorts: a beautiful girl named Isabelle who can turn some lethal tricks with her silver whip, and Alec, Isabelle’s quiet and protective older brother.

Clary is then thrust into a bizarre world-within-a-world – that of the Shadowhunters and Downworlders. When her own mother is attacked by a demon, Jace takes Clary under his wing, and back to the place he and the other Shadowhunters call home – The Institute. Invisible to ‘Mundanes’ (those pesky human folk) and ‘Downworlders’ (demons, vampires etc), The Institute is an old gothic cathedral protected by a glamour and multiple protection charms. There, Clary meets Hodge, guardian of Jace and gets a proper introduction to his adoptive siblings, Isabelle and Alec Lightwood.

She also learns the mysterious truth as to why she can see them.

City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass, the first three books in the series, have everything a speculative fiction fan could want. There are warriors, demons, warlocks and vampires; werewolves, faeries and angels; numerous love triangles, missing parents and a mysterious bad guy named Valentine. Politics, monks, runes and tattoos – it’s all here. The action is non-stop, and the world is to die for (literally). The Mortal Instruments is epic urban fantasy at its crazy best, the ride heart-stoppingly fast with pages that turn themselves. The relationship between Clary and Jace will have you cheering, then horrified, then cautiously whooping again.

Cassie Clare is writing buddies with another well-known author: Holly Black, author of the Spiderwick Chronicles, and more recently, White Cat. Fans of Black will enjoy seeing some of her characters cross over into the Shadowhunter’s world, especially when Clary and co visit the Faerie Realm. I’m also told it works the other way – apparently Jace makes an appearance in White Cat. I’ll let you know soon – that one’s on my TBR pile.

Book four, City of Fallen Angels is due for release in April this year, and will be followed by City of Lost Souls in 2012 and City of Heavenly Fire in 2013. And last year, the first of Clare’s prequel series, The Infernal Devices was released. Clockwork Angel will soon be followed up by Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess. Set 130 years ago in a steampunked Victorian London, we get to meet the family this time round. Descendants of the Lightwoods and other notable characters from The Mortal Instruments series are all here… as well as a couple of err, long-living characters we’ve met in the modern world. Again, Clare does an amazing job of making London her own – just as she does with New York. The steampunkery of zombie-demonbots is shear genius. But really, The Infernal Devices deserves its own post, so I’ll stop that right here.

The other huge news in the Shadowhunting world, is that The Mortal Instruments has been optioned for a movie, with a director (Scott Charles Stewart), screenwriter (Jessica Postigo) on the job, and casting is underway (with Lily Collins confirmed to play Clary).

The Mortal Instruments is one of those series that do need to be read in chronological order to get the most out of the storyline. The Infernal Devices could be read completely independently, but I’d recommend waiting until you’ve read at least the first three Mortal Instruments first – even if it’s just to get some of the ‘in’ jokes and the a-ha moments when a familiar name or character  pops up.

So for now, I’m hanging out for April and looking forward to catching up with some old fictional friends. Apparently, City of Fallen Angels delves a little deeper into the Downworlder’s side of things… namely that of a recently turned Vampire…

Over the last few years we’ve seen a huge rise in the popularity of vampires. But mostly, they’re a different ‘breed’ to the vamps seen around the traps until a few years ago. Suddenly, the undead aren’t so dead, they mope and moan and wish they were human, complaining about the loss of their souls and the agony of living for eternity.

Physically, they’re hotter than hot; far better looking than their human counterparts, which is not a bad deal when you consider what a 200 year old walking corpse should actually look like.  They have a tendency to be filthy rich – as you should be when you’ve got forever to learn which banks give the best returns and let’s face it; their grocery bill is always at a minimum. The modern vampire is also often a ‘day-walker’, that is, sunlight might make him a little uncomfortable, but it doesn’t turn them to a dusty void of nothingness.

Yes, it seems the true vamp is disappearing fast with our modern twist on mythology. Gone are the days of vampires being horrendously ugly monsters, like Nosferatu or The Master from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. These were creatures to be feared, to be repulsed by, the ones who used mind-warping powers to trick you into the opening the window at night and letting them in to suck your life force. Sure, there’s still a few of the old monstrous breed around. They’re not completely extinct. Just check out Marlow and his band of shark-mouthed nasties from 30 Days of Night, or, again from Buffy, the uber-vamps from series 7 – seriously unsexy. Eli from Let the Right One In has to be one of the creepiest vampires in modern tales, not to mention Salem’s Lot’s Kurt Barlow or Viktor from the Underworld trilogy.

But it’s not all black and white, sexy or unsexy, good or evil. No, bloodsuckers these days can have the best of both worlds; there’s a lot of grey in between. No longer is the vampire just a monster with an unquenchable thirst for blood, but he can have feelings too. Think Damon from The Vampire Diaries or even Lestat de Lioncourt from Anne Rice’s deliciously indulgent Vampire Chronicles. These two never pretend to be anything but primal pulse-seeking bloodsuckers – but that doesn’t make them incapable of love. Then of course, there’s the Vamp of the Moment – Eric Northman of Charlaine HarrisSouthern Vampire Mysteries (also the TV series True Blood, in case you’ve been hiding in a coffin somewhere…) Eric is about as bad-arse as a vampire can get. He makes no secret of the fact he’s a superior being, a killer with no regard for human pettiness. But oh… Eric *sigh*. With abs like that – well, he can get away with anything.

Then, there’s another breed of the modern vampire all together. The just-left-of-human one. Yes, I’m talking about those that sparkle. They might drink blood, but do they even qualify as vampires? And what about tales such as Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy, set in a world where the (mostly) good guys – the Moroi – might be vampires, but they’re far from dead? In Claudia Gray’s Evernight series, it’s not always the vamps who are the evil doers, but the misunderstanding humans – The Black Cross; a misinformed sub-culture of slayers.

What about the bloodsuckers who don’t know which side of the fence they hang, those who are confused or bewitched, or just trying too damn hard to be good without the inevitable slip-up? Stefan from The Vampire Diaries comes to mind, as does the whole Vampire with a Soul issue that spun around Buffy and Angel for so long. I don’t know about you, but I have a soft spot for the sarcasm and evil-knows-no-bounds of Angelus versus the sweet, but sometimes predictable Angel. And while we’re in Sunnydale, what about Spike? Was he more fun as the bloodthirsty consort of Drusilla, or once he was implanted with the brain chip, effectively neutering him? And then he went and got himself a soul at the end of series 6, changing a whole lot of things.

Personally, I like a mixture of the old and new vampire stories. I’m a sucker for the evil-doer, but also a huge fan of many of today’s new-style vamps. So what about you? How do you take your bloodsucker? With a spoonful of sugar and a little on the sweet side, or straight up, bitter and twisted?

MUSIC: Marilyn Manson – If I Was Your Vampire

‘It is impossible to know who you really are until you spend time alone in a cemetery.’

Pretty cool, huh? That’s the deliciously dark first line we hear from Silla, one of the three main character viewpoints in Blood Magic. The darkness grips you from that first line – and doesn’t let go for a second.

Silla is sitting alone by the graves of her beloved parents, dead from an apparent murder-suicide the summer before. And she’s reading a book – a book that has mysteriously turned up, addressed to her and written in her father’s handwriting. But for Silla, the weirdest part is that it’s a book of magic. Yep, you guessed it – Blood Magic.

The second viewpoint is that of Nick, or Nicholas. Nick has just moved to the sleepy town of Yaleylah, Missouri, where he spent his early childhood with a crazy mother. A city boy, he’s angry with the world, especially his Dad’s new wife – the dreaded Lilith – a famous author. Nick has inherited his grandfather’s property and it just happens to overlook the cemetery.

It doesn’t take long for the troubled twosome to hook up and in a nice change, there’s no angsty does he? / doesn’t she? drama to get in the way of a good story. Silla and Nick are made for each other, in more ways than one. It’s a believable love affair that’s not too naff or vomit-inducing– well, unless blood makes you queasy that is. And there’s plenty of that.

Together Silla and Nick find themselves thrust into the world of Blood Magic when a hundred-year-old witch comes hunting for the bones of Silla’s parents and the Spell Book. This gal is one of the best and totally psycho antagonists I’ve read in ages. As a reader, we get a chance to get in her head as her story is told in snippets peppered between Silla and Nick’s. To fight her and save themselves, they have to accept who they really are – for Nick, this means facing the reality of what sent his mother off the rails, and for Silla, it means accepting she may never have really known her father. I found it interesting how they both coped with being outcasts at school and in their small town community; Silla finds reprieve in her mask collection, and often imagines herself wearing one of them to hide how she really feels in difficult situations – something many of us do in one way or another.

Just one of the things that kept me turning pages (and up very late at night) was the whodunit. Or, more specifically… Who Is It? Tessa Gratton has written an amazing first novel filled with clues and red-herrings that kept me guessing, along with Silla and Nick who the bad guy or girl really was. Just when I thought I had it figured out, that nasty ol’ witch would go and possess someone else, throwing my theory out the window. The Blood Magic itself is beautiful and gross all bound up together. Yep, there’s A LOT of blood. Heaps of it, actually. And setting most of the story in a cemetery might sound clichéd, but this story is anything but. Although there are a number of viewpoints, we’re never lost and it’s easy to keep track, even when the story jumps constantly within a chapter. In fact, it works really well. There were a lot of loose ends that were left untied by the end, but since this is marked as the first book in a trilogy, it’s an easy thing to forgive. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for number two, which, according to internet rumour will be called ‘The Blood Keeper.’

So if you’re not easily grossed out, but love a good scare, Blood Magic is for you. But beware – you’ll never look at of a murder of crows in quite the same way again…
